Word Search review: ten words, one theme, a clock that keeps you honest
Word search is the oldest puzzle on the newsstand, and WordSearch.gg does not try to reinvent it. It gives you a theme, ten words and a twelve-by-twelve grid, then starts a clock. What it adds is the daily ritual: one shared puzzle for everyone, a share line to post your time, and an Unlimited mode for when one grid is not enough.
- A new theme and grid every day
- Drag or tap two ends to select a word
- Three hints per puzzle, all optional
- Dark mode and a timer you can hide
- No streaks or statistics screen
- Ten words go by quickly
- Only English, French and German
What is Word Search?
Word Search is a free daily word search in the browser. Every puzzle has a theme, such as Ocean, Kitchen or Space, and a list of ten words that belong to it. All ten are hidden in a grid of twelve by twelve letters, and the puzzle is done when you have found the last one.
The site runs in English, French and German, and each language has its own set of 200 themes rather than translations of one list. French players get mots mêlés and German players get Buchstabensalat, each with its own daily puzzle. There is no account and no app to install; progress is saved in the browser, so you can close the tab and come back later.
How a puzzle plays
You can select a word in two ways. Drag across its letters, or tap the first letter and then the last. A found word gets a coloured highlight in the grid and is crossed off the list. A wrong selection flashes red briefly and costs nothing, so there is no penalty for trying a hunch.
Words can run in any of eight directions: across, down, diagonally, and backwards along any of those. That last part is what makes a word search harder than it looks, because your eye naturally reads left to right. Accents are dropped in the grid, so a French word like MARÉE is spelled MAREE among the letters, which keeps the search fair.
If you get stuck there is a Hint button with three uses per puzzle. A hint lights up the first letter of a word you have not found yet for a few seconds. It is a gentle nudge rather than a giveaway, since you still have to find the direction the word runs in.
Daily or Unlimited?
The Daily puzzle changes at midnight in your local time, and everyone playing in the same language gets the same theme and the same grid. When you finish, the clock stops and the result screen shows your time, the words found and the hints used. The Share button copies a single line with the puzzle number, the theme, your time and a light-bulb count if you used hints. It gives nothing away about where the words are.
Unlimited mode picks a new random theme and builds a fresh grid every time you press New puzzle, with no limit. It does not touch the daily puzzle, so it works well as practice or as a longer session. A small “players today” counter shows how many people have finished at least one puzzle that day, each counted once. If you like word puzzles with a bit more invention, Combinations from the same network builds words out of letter fragments instead.
Difficulty and strategy
A twelve-by-twelve grid with ten words is a comfortable size. It is big enough that a word does not jump out at you, and small enough that a methodical sweep always finds it. The difficulty depends mostly on the theme: short words like TIDE hide easily among filler letters, while long ones like JELLYFISH are almost impossible to miss once you spot the J. The timer starts when the puzzle loads and pauses when the tab is in the background, and you can hide it in Settings if you would rather not see the clock.
What could be better
There is no streak counter or statistics page. The result screen and share line are all you get, so you cannot see your average daily time or how many days in a row you have played. For a game built around a daily ritual, that is the most obvious gap.
Ten words is also on the light side. A daily puzzle is over in a few minutes for an experienced player, and the only way to play longer is Unlimited. A larger optional grid for weekends would be welcome. Finally, the language list stops at three, where some sister sites cover seven.
Verdict
Word Search is a calm, tidy version of a classic. The themes give each day a little personality, the tap-to-select option makes it pleasant on a phone, and the hints are restrained enough that they never solve the puzzle for you. It lacks stats and depth, but as a relaxing counterpoint to Wordle or a quick daily palate cleanser, it does exactly what it promises.
