Dordle review: two Wordles, seven guesses and the gentlest step up

RPBy Ricardo Pozzo Updated Oct 9, 2026 4 min read

Dordle is Wordle with a second board bolted on. Every word you type is played on two grids at once, each hiding its own five-letter answer, and you have seven guesses to find both. It is the gentlest of the multi-board variants, and on a busy morning it is often the one we reach for first.

Editor score 4.6 Great
Pros
  • Every guess pulls double duty on two boards
  • Clear split keyboard, left half and right half
  • Separate stats for Daily and Unlimited
  • Seven languages with native keyboard layouts
Cons
  • No hard mode
  • Stats stay on one device
  • No archive of past daily puzzles

What is Dordle?

Dordle follows the rules of Wordle: guess a five-letter word, and each tile turns green for a letter in the right spot, yellow for a letter that is in the word but somewhere else, and grey for a letter that is not in the word at all. The difference is that there are two hidden words, shown as a left board and a right board, and every guess goes into both.

You get seven guesses instead of six. When you solve one board it locks, and the rest of your guesses only count on the other. Find both words within seven and you win. Dordle has a free daily puzzle that is the same pair for everyone, an unlimited mode, and it runs in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch. It uses the same word lists as Wordle.gg, so the answers are ordinary words rather than obscure ones.

How a round plays

A round starts much like Wordle. Your opener comes back with two colourings instead of one, and that alone makes the second guess more interesting: a letter can be green on the left, yellow on the right and missing from neither. The game rejects words that are not in its list, so there is no throwing in five random consonants to test letters.

The keyboard does the bookkeeping. Each key is split down the middle, with the left half showing what that letter did on the left board and the right half showing the right board. Once a board is solved its half stops updating, so the keys only show what you still need. You can type on a physical keyboard as well as tap. With just two boards the split is easy to read from the first round, which is the main reason Dordle feels so much friendlier than its bigger siblings.

When both words are found, the last row bounces, confetti falls, a one-word verdict rates your score and the statistics panel opens. Dark mode follows your device setting and can be switched in Settings. In Daily mode it also shows a countdown to the next puzzle.

Daily or Unlimited?

The Daily puzzle is one pair of words for every player, and it changes at midnight in your local time. The share card gives the puzzle number, the language code and which guess solved each board, so a result might show the left word in three and the right in five out of seven, followed by the coloured rows for both boards side by side. After a board is solved its later rows show as white squares, which makes it easy to see where you closed each one. On phones it opens the system share sheet; on a computer it copies the text.

Unlimited hands you a fresh pair the moment you finish. Statistics are kept separately for each mode and each language: games played, win percentage, current and best streak, and a guess distribution. If two boards feels too easy after a week, Quordle is the same idea with four boards and nine guesses.

Difficulty and strategy

Seven guesses for two words is a fair limit. A good day finishes in four or five, but the slack disappears quickly if one board lands on a crowded pattern, such as an ending like -ATCH or -OUND that fits a long list of words. The losses we have had were almost always one board solved early and the other left with too many candidates and too few guesses.

What works for us
Open with a word full of common letters, like CRANE or SLATE, then use your second guess on fresh letters.
Finish the board you are closer on first, then spend every remaining guess on the other one.
Read both halves of a key before typing. A letter that is grey on one board can still be right on the other.

What could be better

There is no hard mode, so nothing stops you from ignoring a green letter on one board to fish for information on the other. Veterans who like the extra discipline will have to impose it on themselves.

The statistics also live in your browser rather than in an account, so a streak on your phone does not carry over to your laptop. And while Unlimited means you are never short of puzzles, there is no way to go back and play a daily pair you missed. None of this spoils the daily game, but these are the gaps we noticed.

Verdict

Dordle is the natural next step after Wordle. Two boards are enough to make every guess count twice, but not so many that you spend the round reading the keyboard. Seven languages with proper keyboards, a tidy share card and a real unlimited mode make it easy to recommend, and when it starts to feel comfortable, Quordle is waiting.
