Wordle in One review: one clue row, five puzzles, and a very different kind of Wordle
Wordle in One flips Wordle around. Instead of building up clues over six guesses, you start with a single row that has already been played and coloured against a hidden answer, and your job is to find a word that fits it. Get it on the first try and you have solved it in one. It is a short, sharp daily habit with a timer attached.
- A genuinely new twist on the Wordle rules
- Non-dictionary words never cost a try
- Wrong tries show exactly which tiles break the clue
- Five shared daily puzzles plus Unlimited
- No way to lose, so less tension than Wordle
- No hard mode or other difficulty setting
- Stats stay on one device
What is Wordle in One?
Wordle in One is a free browser puzzle built on Wordle’s colours. Each puzzle shows a clue: a five-letter word that has already been coloured against a hidden answer, with green for a letter in the right spot, yellow for a letter in the word but elsewhere, and grey for a letter that is not in it. You type a five-letter word that fits every one of those colours.
The name refers to the single clue row, not to a single guess. You can try as often as you need, and the clue never changes. Any dictionary word that matches every clue counts as a solve, even if it is not the word the puzzle was built from. Each clue has between two and four coloured tiles, so there is always something to work with but rarely enough to make it obvious.
It is an independent game made by fans, with no connection to the original Wordle or the New York Times, and it says so in its footer.
How a round plays
You start with the green letters, because they fix part of the word before anything else. Then you place the yellows, each of which rules out its own position, and steer around the greys. The on-screen keyboard is coloured from the clue, so you can see which letters you need and which to avoid without looking back up.
When a word does not fit, it is added to your list of tries and the tiles that break the clue turn red, with a short message naming any letter you left out. That feedback is the best part of the design: you learn exactly why a word failed. A word that is not in the dictionary is simply rejected and does not count as a try, so a typo never costs you.
A timer starts with your first keypress and a try counter runs alongside it. There is no failure state. You keep going until you find a word that fits, and the score is how many tries and how much time it took.
Daily, Unlimited and seven languages
The Daily is a set of five puzzles, the same for every player, and a new set arrives at midnight in your local time. Solve one and the game moves you on to the next. Progress is saved in the browser, so you can leave a half-finished set and come back later. At the end you see how many of the five you solved, your total tries, your time and your streak, with a bar for each puzzle.
The share card lists each puzzle on its own line, with a black square for every wrong try and a green square for the solve, under a header such as “Wordle in One #7 EN · 6 tries · 2:41”. Unlimited gives you one puzzle at a time and a new one whenever you are ready, with its own statistics: games played, average tries, best streak and a distribution from one try to six or more.
It plays in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch, each with its own dictionary, keyboard and stats. Settings has a dark mode, and a counter shows how many players have finished the daily set or solved an unlimited puzzle today in your language.
Difficulty and strategy
Wordle in One rewards a different skill from Wordle. You are not choosing probes to gather information; you are reading a fixed set of constraints and searching your vocabulary for a word that satisfies all of them. Repeated letters are where most wrong tries come from. Each green or yellow tile accounts for one copy of a letter, and if the clue also shows a grey copy of the same letter, the answer has exactly that many copies and no more.
What could be better
Because you cannot run out of tries, a bad puzzle never ends in a loss, only in a higher count. That suits a relaxed morning puzzle, but players who like Wordle’s six-row tension may miss it. There is also no hard mode or difficulty setting, so the challenge only changes with the clue you are given.
Accepting any dictionary word that fits is fair, but on some clues several common words match, and the first one you think of wins. Finally, statistics are kept in the browser, so a streak does not follow you between devices.
Verdict
Wordle in One is the most original of the Wordle spin-offs we have played. The red tiles on wrong tries make every mistake teach you something, five daily puzzles are a good length, and the timer adds just enough pressure. Play it alongside a classic Wordle rather than instead of one; they exercise different skills.
